MS Return to band plan

1/15/2021

Wednesday, teachers received notification that we will be returning to in-person learning on Tuesday, January 19th.

As we transition back to in-person learning, there will be some changes to band in an effort to rehearse as safely as possible and continue to slow the spread of COVID-19.

New Masks
All members of the band (with the exception of flutes and percussion who will wear normal masks) will be required to wear musician masks that allow students to play their instrument while still wearing a mask. These masks will be purchased through the band office for $5, payable to P-T Band (50% of the original price). If students have money in their student account, they may use those funds to pay for their new mask. These masks will need to be washed on a regular basis. Again, these masks will be a requirement for all students (with the exception of flutes and percussion).

If a student should misplace their mask, they will have to purchase a new one for the full price of $10.

Information regarding these masks can be found here:
https://www.bandshoppe.com/shop/health-safety/overlapping-music-mask-701051/

Distance Learning
Students that choose the Distance Learning option will be expected to attend band rehearsal via Google Meet every day and submit playing assignments. This will hopefully allow them to have a bit of social interaction and allow them to continue to participate in band even if it is through a Distant Learning model.

I hope you are well.  If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.  Thank you.

Good Afternoon,

Beginning Band students received a Band Progress Report today. If your student is missing any assignments, those can still be turned in for full credit. Please note, distance learning assignments are for a grade. If you have any questions or concerns about your student's grade, please feel free to contact myself or Mr. Nichols.

Students were instructed to have their parents/guardians sign their Progress Report and return them tomorrow for a grade.

Hope you are all doing well!

Distance Learning

9/23/2020

I wanted to take a moment to reach out to you regarding what band will look like for your student for the next 2 weeks.

Myself and Mr. Robinson will be posting 4-5 videos per week on google classroom.  These videos will be short, and they will demonstrate what students should be practicing throughout the week.  We will also ask students to submit 2 video recordings throughout the week so that we may see their progress.  These videos will be of students playing lines out of their band book.

Yesterday, students were sent home with a letter that informs them how to submit video recordings through google classroom.  That letter is also attached to this email.  Students only need access to a smartphone to submit these recordings.  They do not have to be on wifi to do these, as they will upload just from your phone service.  While they can use a computer or tablet, a smartphone is usually the easiest way to complete these assignments.

The letter that was sent home yesterday also included information on students practice reports.  Practice reports are a way to ensure that students are practicing every day.  These reports will also be done through google classroom, and can also be done using only a smartphone.  They will take about 30 seconds to complete and will ask for their parent or guardian to type their name, confirming that they did indeed practice the amount they said they did.  STUDENTS SHOULD BE PRACTICING AT LEAST 15-20 MINUTES EVERY DAY.  Practice reports will be due every Sunday night.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  Thank you!

6th and 7th Grade Band Distance Learning

3/31/2020

Hello,

I hope that everyone is doing well during these difficult times.  As you have heard, the state Board of Education has instructed us to continue students learning through distance learning.  While this will be a difficult task for everyone involved, we will do the best that we can so that everyone can be successful these next few weeks.

Below you will find all of the details for how this will play out for band students.  Please be sure to read through EVERYTHING, as there is a lot of information.

Unfortunately, students who left their instruments at school will not be able to obtain those instruments until the state Board of Education opens up schools again.  If your student does not currently have their instrument, they will still need to submit a written assignment, which is detailed below.

Students will be receiving invitations to a google classroom for band.  IT WILL BE SENT TO STUDENTS SCHOOL EMAILS.  If they do not have access to their school email, please let me know so that I can send that information to you.  If you have problems accessing google classroom, please let me know and we will assist you.  Students will need to log into their school emails and accept the invitation BY THIS THURSDAY, APRIL 2ND so that we know who does and does not have access.

Students will need to submit 1 assignment per week, which will be sent out at the beginning of each week.  The assignments will consist of either a playing assignment OR a written response to a video that will be posted.  These written responses will be a reflection of a short video that will consist of 1-2 paragraphs.

Every week, Mr. Robinson and I will post videos of the playing lesson for that week.  These lessons will be short, consisting of a counting exercise, a scale, and a line or two out of their essential elements book (6th grade) or a few measures from their Cimarron Valley music (7th grade).  These lines will be uploaded to google classroom every week, so if your student does not have their books or music, they will be able to download the scanned copies that we upload.  Students should practice along with us and practice on their own.  Even students that do not have their instruments should watch these videos just to be aware of what we are talking about  They can then submit a recording of what we have instructed them to submit for that week to google classroom.  If students need to do the written response instead of the playing assignment because they do not have their instrument, then they can TYPE their response and upload it to google classroom.  All instructions for all assignments each week will be detailed in google classroom.

If your student does not have access to the internet at home, then they will be receiving a packet with the lines they should be practicing each week at home.

Due to the circumstances, students' grades will not be dropped for the remainder of the year.  Grades can only go up, not down.

To summarize, be looking for an invitation in students' school emails to the band google classroom.  Assignments will be sent out at the beginning of every week through google classroom.

As always, if you have any questions, please let us know via email.  Working on band should not be a stressful thing for you or your students these coming weeks.  Their grade will not suffer.  This is a difficult time and we will do everything we can to help your child.

Stay safe!

6th Grade Band UPDATE

3/24/2020

Good Evening!

A lot of information is going to be coming your way from myself, other teachers, and the school in the next few days. Please read EVERYTHING VERY CAREFULLY.

Tomorrow morning, the Oklahoma State Board of Education is expected to vote on NOT resuming school as "normal" for the rest of the school year. Instead, we may be doing some form of distance learning (i.e., learning/working from home). Again, this is all pending the State Board vote tomorrow morning--nothing is finalized yet.

In the case the decision to not resume school as "normal" passes, beginning April 6th, we will embark on the adventure of having band and other classes at home. I do not know what this will look like yet, although Mr. Nichols and I have some ideas. As for right now, we do not have a lot of answers for you, but we will continue to find out more as the week progresses.

In the meantime, in order to prepare for what may come to pass, we need every student to fill out the Google Form below. Please only fill it out ONCE per student.

https://forms.gle/v8uzvMYsGnWrg8XA8

I know this is weird and not what we wanted, but we can only control what we can control. Everyone's health and safety must come first. Mr. Nichols and I are brainstorming like crazy to find a way to make this meaningful and enjoyable for everyone. I hope you are all well. Be looking for more information tomorrow.

Hang in there--we'll get through this together!

Mr. Robinson & Mr. Nichols
